2010 ANNUAL JEDI GATHERING – SAWYER, MI (http://www.jediresourcecenter.org/brochure/index.htm)

What: 2010 Annual Jedi Gathering

We're expecting at least 15-30 people this year! :)

When: Thursday July 22, 2010 – Sunday July 25, 2010

Check in is at 4 pm on Thursday July 22nd and check out is at noon on Sunday July 25th. People can filter in throughout the weekend, although everyone is encouraged to be there for the full day on Saturday when the majority of workshops will take place.

Tower Hill Camp is located right along Lake Michigan, an hour and a half from Chicago in the Dunes region of western Michigan.

You can fly into Detroit or Chicago and have local members drive people the rest of the way. There is also a Greyhound Station at Benton Harbor which is only 20 minutes from the site. People can also come in their and attendees would be glad to do pick-up/drop-off.

Accommodations: Lodging in Gammon Hall

Gammon Hall (http://www.il-odm.org/home/content/view/115/115/) is a multi story building with shared hotel style rooms and a few rooms with shared restrooms. The building includes two meeting areas and a screened in porch. Features also include air-conditioning and single level beds. In addition, all bedding and towels are provided.

Top floor rooms consist of four bedrooms with two single beds each (one with a private bathroom), one bedroom with a double bed and a single bed, two bedrooms with three single beds, and one bedroom with two single beds and one double bed. There are three bathrooms with two showers and one bath rub located off the central hall and also a balcony with a porch.

The main floor consists of one room with one double bed and one single bed, one room with two single beds and one double bed, and one room with two single beds. All bedrooms have private bathrooms. There is also a meeting room with ten to twelve foot ceilings large enough for 25 people and features a fireplace, TV, VCR/DVD, refrigerator, microwave, coffee machine, and electronic piano/organ. A snack bar is also available in the main floor hallway.

The lower level has 8 foot ceilings, a meeting/dining room for up to 50 people, a fireplace, a furnished kitchen, two unisex bathrooms and a ping-pong table.

The building can sleep 30 people comfortably. Should we required the use of extra sleeping space we can also rent nearby cabins. Given that there may be newborns in our Jedi community, we may go ahead an add cabins to our reservation.

People with families and special needs will be given priority in the request of rooms (i.e. rooms on the first floor for ease). All other rooms will be assigned in order of priority based on order of advanced registration.

There is also the option of tenting for $6 a night. Tent sites are located about a ten minute walk from Gammon Hall and will have access to electrical outlets. Bathrooms/showers are about five minutes away, although may only have cold to lukewarm water.

Campground Amenities:

The dining hall is a separate building that is located directly across from Gammon Hall, just a minute’s walk away. Parking is also available in that area.

The campground has plenty of trees along with some open fields and beach access along the lake about a 10-15 minute hike away. In addition, there are picnic areas scattered throughout the grounds.

A shared outdoor fire pit is available about a 5 to 7 minute walk from Gammon Hall.

Cost: $100 - $135 for the entire weekend, free for kids 5 and under

The cost for lodging is $75 and will cover four days and three nights in Gammon Hall. The cost for food is $50 and will include dinner provided by the Gathering hosts on Thursday, and breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Friday and Saturday and breakfast on Sunday in the dining hall. (NOTE: Pricing based off of current figures. The cost is subject to change should Tower Hill raise their rates for the coming year.)

Should we request the use of their climbing wall and/or the ropes/initiatives course, the participants will be asked to pay an additional fee.

To help with reservations, we ask that people pay a $25 advance deposit per person. Early registration will result in a $25 discount, whereas registration after June 1st will result in a $10 late fee. The price break down is as follows:

$75 (+ $25 deposit) for a total of $100 "Early Bird Discount" if sent by January 1, 2010.
$100 (+ $25 deposit) for a total of $125 if sent by June 1, 2010.
$135 (no deposit, +10 late fee) if paid at the door.

You will be sent details on how to send your advance deposit when you submit a Gathering Registration Form (http://jediresourcecenter.org/vb/misc.php?do=form&fid=1). Full payment can be made at the door or at your earliest convenience.

For anyone with financial considerations, a payment plan can be worked out. There is also tenting available for only $6 a night, although these sites fill up quickly, so they should be reserved in advance. Additionally, the meal plan is optional, so you may also choose to provide your own food for less cost. Thursday night dinner will be provided regardless.

Food: Optional Meal Plan / Bring Your Own

We most likely provide our traditional spaghetti dinner on Thursday night as people arrive. Everyone will also have the option of either purchasing a meal plan or bringing their own food to cook in the available kitchen for their meals on Friday and Saturday and breakfast on Sunday.

Meals are served buffet style and there is always fresh fruit, vegetables and salads with all the meals. The Tower Hill cooking staff are nutritionists and dieticians, so if anyone has any allergies or special dietary restrictions, just let them know ahead of time and they can accommodate our group needs. If anyone has a highly specific diet, though, it may be best to just provide your own food for the weekend.

Prices are as follows:

Meals:
8:30am – Breakfast - $6.00
12:30pm – Lunch - $7.50
6:00pm – Dinner - $8.50

If you are interested in purchasing a meal plan, you must confirm at least 10 days prior to the event so Tower Hill can purchase the adequate amount of supplies.

Events: Workshops and Discussions

Gathering activities are To Be Determined pending possible workshop leaders. If you’re interested in leading a workshop, please include that information in your Jedi Gatherings Registration Form (http://jediresourcecenter.org/vb/misc.php?do=form&fid=1).

Packing List

A rough packing list can be found here (http://jediresourcecenter.org/vb/faq.php?faq=b#faq_kj), although you will not need any tents, sleeping bags, or sheets, since beds and linens will be provided.

How should the $20 per person be remitted?

We're working on getting our Paypal account re-activated right now. Another option is sending it through snail mail, but I need to talk to Gabe a bit more about it first. We'll get back to you with details by Labor Day weekend.

I've updated the Gathering announcement with new information about advanced registration. The early registration fee has been raised to $25, but you also get a $25 discount if you register before January 1st, or really a $35 discount if you look at the price in comparison to registering at the door. In order to register, though, you must fill out a Gathering Registration Form (http://jediresourcecenter.org/vb/misc.php?do=form&fid=1).

Once you register, you will receive a letter with details on how and where to submit your early deposit. Our paypal account has also now been re-activated, although there may be extra fees involved with paying through paypal. I'll be calling the company tomorrow to clarify.

Well, car and license is a go, so I can pick people up an shuttle them out from Detroit or Lansing if they want to fly in from there. If there is a particularly large number of people, we can look at renting a van or something.

Will you have an option for disable veterans and/or a low impact choice for families?

I haven't done a 5 mile run since I left my unit in Germany. I wonder if I could get back to that? Except I really prefer running in formation to just running alone. It can get rather boring.

If anyone has Formal training in Kendo I would like a class in that using the sparring lightsabers. I just bought a Katana this summer and so that has been on my mind.

If anyone has formal training in Fencing I would like a class in that. I am rather self-taught on the Sabre but would love any tips.

Well I have a friend that's an Olympic level fencer. Unfortunately, she's not into the Jedi community. So she wont be attending the gathering. But if you have any questions regarding saber or epee. I would be more than happy to direct them to her for the answers.

Rivan - I'm sure there will be a few there that can help you with that. Mindas Ar'ran might be a good man to poke :) As far as running...Myself and my Husband Mindas ran that program last time. We aloud each person to go at there own pace. I lead the walk team while Mindas lead the running...except that no one except for Jeremy ever showed up on time for class ;) hehe

As for distance...I don't even think the group went over a mile...just to the beach and back.

Long time no post for me everyone. This is Leo Dorsey from the MD area with Moonshadow. I will post this gathering event on the Jedi Guardians web site www.jediguardians.com and see what kind of response I get. I am sure the guys will show out for such a huge gig. The Jedi Guardians have changed their format over the last couple of years but our hearts are the same. If you guys are up for saber classes we can offer some unique backgrounds from the various instructors and sensei's in our group. I'll keep you posted on a definate headcount.

I was up in time for the running, just wondering where everyone else was while waiting inside rather than outside. :p

We've also had a few fencers at past Gatherings. It all depends if they'll be attending the next one and will want to lead a workshop.

The brochure has almost all of the basic info. We're mostly just waiting on people to register so we can figure out who's coming and what types of workshops will be offered. I'll probably be going around to all the sites again to bump up my announcement threads soon.

What kind of details are you interested in knowing more about?

Moonshadow

Yeah, unfortunately it's hard to create a rough itinerary until the registrations really start coming in, usually only a couple months before the Gathering. We'll probably have all the usual... some sort of martial arts / sword work, some sort of qigong / tai chi, some sort of energy work / psychic development, some sort of physical fitness, some sort of meditation / shamanic journeying, etc. And of course a campfire and s'mores! :D Last year we also had a lot of fun joining in with the kids' games. And I would definitely like to have more team building activities like we've had at past Gatherings.

You've had some really great ideas in the past, so if you still have details on those proposed workshops, feel free to post them again. I can't remember if you might have even already posted them in this thread.

Gabe or I will start posting some rough attendance and workshop lists as soon as we start getting a few more registrations, but right now there's unfortunately really not too much to report.

Sounds good, Abi! Just post or e-mail a detailed description of any workshop you want to teach to me or Gabe, along with whatever related experience or qualifications you have. We probably won't start making any decisions on workshops until late Spring / early Summer, though, when we have a better overall idea of what workshops would be available and what people are interested in. At that time, we'll probably post all the available descriptions and let people express their opinions. Based on that, we'd then try to go along with the majority, while also attempting to provide the best variety of different subject matters.

@ Emz, really, really looking forward to it!! I can't wait to meet Kairi!!!! :D

How much $$ does your guest need to make it up to the gathering? How much is she able to put in? and how much is she lacking?

where is she coming from? Perhaps someone can carpool her?

Same goes for you ^_^

So, someone's taking notes to do an article up for next month's Force Realists, right? :D (don't forget the photos too!!!! XD!!!!)

Also, we can do more than just one article on it. Someone COULD do one on the gathering itself, another on something that you learned and yet another on meeting the people there.

lol, it would be nice to be able to get a few different articles from you guys, but at the very least, I'd like one on the gathering itself. ^^

No problem about pictures, but I'll see if there are any volunteers to do articles. ;)

Seta, you could always attend one and then do the journalism from first hand experience. ;)

Oh, my husband and I intend on being in New Zealand this January. But come on, I produce something every month...we need fresh journalists-I'm a boring writer. ;)

Just randomly popped in to check how things are going here and realized this was going on now. Hope you are all having a good time, wish I could have made it. Maybe next time...unless next time is the Kiwi trip which I wish I could do but yeah, no. ;)

Kitsu checking in!! We left early. Figuring it was easier to drive at night when its not so hot, roads are clear, and Kairi is sleeping. (Which it was) We made good time and are home safe and well ^_^

Working on an Article within the next day or so, pictures will follow a bit later. Sadly this year I had to be a mommy and my duty as Picture keeper is still mostly on hold until I can get my hands free again. Waiting to hear back from moon on the picture collection so far.

Big hugs to all of you, and BE SAFE to those that have yet to hit the road. It was great to meet all, new and old.

May the force be with you!

So this is my first gathering and I must say "WOW!!" What a great time I'm having here. For a little over a year Moonshadow has been trying to convince me to go to this event and I was always shakey on it. My thoughts was always with the "oh it's not my thing" type of excuses. Nothing can be further from the truth. The Gathering is right up my alley.

The description I used all weekend long to express what my impression of the Gathering was that the Jedi's...no make that friends all showed "a great vibe". But it's more than that it's a feeling of everyone having the same values and interest.

Honestly, this is like a meeting of adopted family members you pick by choice.

This years Gathering has plenty of new attendees other than me. But I think the most awesome newest member would have to be Kairi daughter of Midas and Kitsu. I have discovered that her Jedi power is her heart melting smile.

Moonshadow and Angelus have done an excellent job organizing this event. I know for a fact that there has been tireless effort put in by the both of them to make this Gathering a success. I just want to let them know they have done just that.

The location and staff at host retreat center have been outstanding. There was never a time I didn't felt welcomed by them or the other campers who was there at the same time. My favorite being "Number two" aka Chris "with a C".

I loved all the workshops that was available for us to learn from. It's great to know that there is so much knowledge within our community.

I really felt a connection with everything and everyone here. I can't wait to come back next year. This time as a person who's not just sitting back and "observing".

I would like to also thank Kairi's family for being such a great host during the pre Gathering. I can't give out too much details on what went on because I sworn oath to secrecy. I can give a few hints: Foot, star, wall, pizza, ddr, cane,& Thor.

Last but not least... the Beach & Council Meetings. enuff said

I WILL BE BACK FOR 2011

Thanks to everyone who attended the 2010 Jedi Gathering for making it such an amazing experience! It was so great to see all of you and reconnect with old friends and meet new ones. Pictures will be posted as soon as possible, but may take a bit of time due to the sheer volume of them.
