I know there aren't many local Jedi here, but on January 30th, I will be participating in the Annual Polar Bear Plunge to help raise money for Special Olympics Maryland and am looking for more people to join me as a community service event. I did it last year as well and it’s a great event for a great cause and a ton of fun. After all, how can leaping into a freezing cold bay in the middle of the Winter not be fun? :p

In any case, if anyone is interested in either joining the team or volunteering donations, it would be greatly appreciated. :)

Here are the details:

Event: 2010 Annual Polar Bear Plunge
Date: Saturday, January 30, 2010
Time: 1:00pm
Carpool Time: 8:30 am
Location: Sandy Point State Park
City/Town: West Annapolis, MD
What: To participate, each person pledges to take a dip in the Chesapeake Bay and raise at least $50 in donations. With the $50 of raised funds you get a nice warm plunge sweatshirt, a free lunch, a photo gift, and the satisfaction of raising money for a worthy cause. :) There will also be a lot of fun events and activities available there as well.

I started a team called the Sinai Plungers (http://plungemd.kintera.org/sinai). To register and join...

Go to: http://plungemd.kintera.org
Click on “Register Now”
Click “Join a Team” and choose “Sinai Plungers” from the list
Then just fill out the registration form.

If anyone is interested in joining but has concerns about raising the $50, just let me know and I can help you out. Also, if you're concerned about how deep you have to go in the water, there's no depth requirement, so you could even just dip a toe in and still be considered a Plunger.

If you’re not interested in joining the team but would still like to donate, feel free to visit my personal page (http://plungemd.kintera.org/aimee) to leave a donation.

Please consider joining me and let me know if you have any questions. If you don't live in Maryland, but this seems like something you'd be interested in, they have them in other states as well.

I'm so very proud of you for doing this. I promise I will join you next year...dressed as Elvis.

I believe The Special Olympics is a wonderful cause. I had the pleasure of being a "hugger" for a great athlete named Bernie. My middle school was next to a specialty school name Cedar Lane. The eighth graders got work experience there. At the end of the year we were asked to volunteer for the Special Olympics.

Bernie won gold in two out of the four events. His mom couldn't make it to the Olympic. But we were his "chaperon" and proud cheerleaders. I don't have any physical reminders of it. But I sure have the wonderful memories in my heart.

So I know first hand what a wonderful job and sense of accomplishment the S.O. provides. Thank you for helping out with the cause.

They're calling for 12 inches of snow Friday and Saturday, so it should be an extra fun Plunge this year. :p Hopefully they're overestimating a bit, but it's definitely going to be a cold weekend regardless.
