Anyone know the brand or where I can get a fairly good quality, reasonably priced heart rate monitor for my training? Really not looking to spend a huge amount of money on it, but still want something that's fairly accurate at the same time.

I think the best thing you can do is count manually. I bought a wristwatch that's supposed to be as "accurate as an EKG", but yeah, that's some BS. haha

The problem is it's hard to get an accurate manual count when I'm still moving. :p I have a co-worker who bought a really accurate heart rate monitor, but it was over $150, which is a bit pricey.

I saw a hrm with chest strap at Wal Mart this morning for about $50. That seems reasonable to me. It looks a lot like the Puslar brands at the gym.

$50 is definitely reasonable, but I wouldn't trust it to work unless I got some feedback from people who actually used it and found it to be accurate.

A friend of mine bought the one found at this site and is very pleased with it:

http://www.amazon.com/LifeSource-UB-.../dp/B000B66RQE

That particular one is a bit bulky with the blood pressure cuff included, but thanks for the idea to check out Amazon. I didn't even consider the fact they might sell heart rate monitors, and it's great being able to read all the comments about the different products.

I also came across this site (http://www.martinrothonline.com/personalhealthmonitor/Articles/heart_rate_monitors_guide.htm) in my search, if anyone else is interested in learning more about different heart rate monitors as well.

I'll let you know which one I end up picking. Too bad I can't afford the Garmin 405 CX (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B002503EK6/ref=ord_cart_shr?_encoding=UTF8&m=A1394B1K82XHSA&v=glance). It actually has an internal GPS that calculates the mileage you walk and can even post a map of your route. Only $369.95 :p

I actually own the $50 Wal-Mart heart rate monitor (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10719755#ShortReviewTitleBar ) which I am more than impressed with. Now, it's my first heart rate monitor, so I don't have anything to compare it by, but the design is good, it seems to be accurate and you can't beat the price. The reviews on the Walmart site are quite favorable as well.

My favorite feature is that you can use it with or without the chest strap. So use the chest strap for a constant update, or just use wear the watch and use the touch sensitive buttons for a now update.

I can't run at this time but should get one of those for my walks to see how much my heart rate actually goes up since it always takes me forever to get it going, even at the gym on a tread mill or elliptic walker. I sweat easily but at the same time my heart rate will not go up as fast as most peoples'. Nothing wrong with it just a larger size than most.

Thanks! It's nice to see positive feedback about it before purchasing. I actually went ahead and ended up purchasing that one after you recommended it. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but I'll keep you updated. :)
